Adobe to buy macromedia!!! Wha, Wha, Whaaat?!
Well there goes the neighborhood….
I say that jokingly, being a long time Adobe user myself, but in the last 2+ years I’ve switched over to macromedia Studio MX for web design and development and have never looked back. Let’s just say that when it comes to web development software, macromedia kicks Adobe’s ass.
Period.
I’ve also been keeping a close eye on macromedia’s strategy to move “the web” forward with recently launched products like Central, Captivate and FLASH Lite and their incorporation of standards based technologies like CSS/XHTML, XML and RSS.
With that said, Adobe hasn’t been doing much on those fronts at all, so I’m a little sketched out by this announcement.
To say that these are “two huge players” in their industry is a bit of an understatement! I can only hope that Adobe will not F’ up the many great things that macromedia is doing, and has in incubation for web-related software and technology. One thing is for certain…. Adobe will have the market cornered, and if they can successfully meld the two companies it would create an awesome developemnt suite!
No matter what, this should make some room for the next great small companies to step up to the plate and fill the void that macromedia will leave behind!
As one source points out, now might be the time to pick up Studio MX. This merger isn’t likely to bring future prices down, but there usually is a sweet upgrade path for existing customers. From personaly experience, macromedia has always treated my very well with offers and incentives.
Read some more about this where you like, because there will be plenty of opinions flying! Just try the Adobe site later, because right now it bonking from all of today’s traffic:
